Bike Repair Day for Inner City Residents
The Livia Stoyke Foundation's (LSF) bike repair day went very well. The 9 volunteer bike mechanics fixed close to 100 bikes for inner city residents over 5 hours on Sunday, September 19th, 2004. The Edmonton Host's Lions Club provided over 900 hot dogs to hundreds of inner city residents and supplied most of the 40 helmets and several of the bikes we gave away. Both the Lions and ourselves are very happy with the partnership.
All concerned are interested in doing this again next year!
Here is a comment made by Albert, who got his bike repaired:
"I feel like I am driving a new bike. I am happy. Thanks so much for all your help."
Another comment made by Maria, a single mother who lost her job because her bike had broken down and she could not get to work in time:
"Thank you for fixing my bike. I can now look for work again and find a job."
This day would not have been possible without the support of the Board of the LSF, the Livia Stoyke Foundation donors (who supply us the dollars to make this happen), Brent, Aaron, Adrian and Robert from Redbike, Kristy and Kim (and husband Greg) from the Dirt Girls, Karen and Alan from the Lions Club, all the Lions Club vounteers, Father Jim from Sacred Heart Parrish, Chris Martin, Rachelle Van Zanten, Scott McKeen from the Journal, River Valley Cycle for the donation of a bike (went to a 11 year old who was very happy), Mountain Equipment Co-op for a $100 in-kind donation and so many more. Thanks to all of you for supporting this program. We are making a difference together :)
Racecourse Community School Donation
The Livia Stoyke Foundation donated $5,000 towards the Racecourse Community School in Zambia, Africa. The school badly needs funds to pay for books, equipment, food and electricity so that African teachers can provide an education to over 2,000 orphans and vulnerable children. The foundation is also helping to promote this cause through the creation of print material and assisting with media relations. Please learn more about this group below or e-mail racecourse@gmail.com to reach Heather or Thulasy, the Edmonton and Calgary Coordinators, respectively.
If you would like to make a donation directly to the Racecourse Fundraising Initiative, e-mail Heather and Thulasy at racecourse@gmac.com. Tax receipts will be made available through St. Paul's United Church.

Micro Credits for Rural Women
The Livia Stoyke Foundation supports the Grameen
Foundation, which helps provide micro credits to the poor, primarily
rural women, from around the world. Loans often as little as a few dollars
allow many of these women to establish a cottage industry, providing food,
shelter, education and even health care for their families in perpetuity.
